Pre-CanSkate
 

Prerequisites

Lesson Format

Skills

No previous skating experience required, recommended for children aged 3 and older. However, CSA approved helmets are mandatory.  Group Lessons (1 half-hour lesson per week).

Eight skills are required to pass in order to move on to CanSkate. Skaters receives a Pre CanSkate Ribbon.

  1. Balancing on two feet
  2. Falling down and getting up
  3. Moving forward
  4. Moving backward
  5. Marching around on spot
  6. Making snow
  7. Jumping on the spot
  8. Two foot twist on the spot

Skaters, regardless of age need to pass this in order to move onto CanSkate.

Evaluations are completed on an ongoing basis by coaches. 

 

CanSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
All new skaters will be assessed by the coaching staff and placed into the most appropriate program within the first week. CSA approved helmets are mandatory. Group Lessons (1 hour, 1 night a week).

There are six stages with three fundamentals in each

1. Balance: Concentrating on most forward skills, pushing technique and edges

2. Control: Concentrating on most backward skills, stopping, and speed elements

3. Agility: Concentrating on most turning and jumping skills

Every skater needs to pass the 3 fundamentals (balance, control and agility) in order to pass a stage.

 Each time a fundamental is mastered, the skater is awarded a ribbon. Once all three in that level are mastered, a badge is awarded.

Evaluations are completed on an ongoing basis by coaches.

STARSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
Intermediate: Skaters must have passed stage 6 of the CanSkate program
Senior: Skaters must have achieved 2 of the following: Dance - Star 5a, Freeskate - Star 3, Skills - Star 3 and/or be invited up at the coaches discretion.
Intermediate: Group lessons for free skate, dance, skills and stroking. Private lessons with a are strongly recommended.
Senior: At least 25% of the session will be group coaching. Private coaching must be arranged between the skater/parent and the freelance coaches of your choice.

Skating Skills: a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo. The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program. The movements are derived from former compulsory figures, free skating and ice dancing. The objective of the Skating Skills program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating - edge quality, control, power and speed.

Ice Dance: teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison. There are both traditional compulsory dances, and Creative Dances to challenge skaters' creativity, artistry and originality.

Free Skate: the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music.

Artistic: to encourage and develop skaters' creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music, as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style. The program provides skaters with the opportunity to explore the performance aspect of skating without focusing on technical elements.

For each discipline, skaters participate in testing to progress through sequential levels.

Skating Skills: Star 1-Gold

Ice Dance: Star 1-Gold

Free Skate: Star 1-Gold

Artistic: Star 5-Gold 

 

Star 1-5 assessments are done on an ongoing basis by coaches. 

Star 6-Gold assessments are done by a Skate Canada judge on high test days. 

 

Power Skating

**NEW PROGRAM**

A professionally coached session focused on balance, control, and agility, including components of power and speed to enhance skating for hockey and ringette players. Skating skills, techniques and performance drills are taught in a progressive format by Skate Canada coaches certified through the NCCP. This is Canada's only nationally regulated NCCP instructional stream power skating program. 

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
Must have passed CanSkate Stage 4 or have equivalent hockey/ringette experience (approximately U11)  Full group instruction with warm-up, group lesson time, development time, and cool-down.

Balance: forward skills 

Control: backward skills and stops 

Agility: Turning, pivoting, and starts

All participants will be evaluated to a Bronze, Silver, or Gold level in all skills, in each of the three categories of Balance, Control, and Agility, and will receive an overall bronze, silver or gold assessment with a report card and badge. 

Assessment is done on an ongoing basis by coaches.
